Greenwood, BC

Welcome to Canada's smallest city! Originally founded as a mining and smelting city in 1897 during a copper boom in the area, Greenwood never relinquished its city status following the close of the mines and smelter -- not even when its population sunk to a meager 200 during World War II. Now boasting a population of nearly 800, this little city remains a beautiful stop with a rich heritage.

See where the 2000 Oscar-nominated movie Snow Falling on Cedars was filmed, as you tour Greenwood's historic sites. Walk through the old courthouse, including the old-time courtroom and jail featured in the film, then stop at the Greenwood Museum to pick up a "Heritage Walk" brochure for a walk past the city's other heritage sites. Admire the detail of the Victorian architecture throughout town as you learn more about the history of the copper smelter, the courthouse, and the old hotel block. It will soon become clear why Snow Falling on Cedars was nominated for the Academy Award for Cinematography!

Greenwood is located on the Crowsnest Highway (Hwy 3) between Osoyoos and Grand Forks, 175 km (109 mi.) southeast of Kelowna. Commercial bus service is available, with a paved airport in Grand Forks, 42 km (24 mi.) east of Greenwood.
